Child First Aid Classes Sydney

The Nest HQ

We (The Nest HQ team) are parents too. This means we are not immune to the everyday anxieties that parenthood brings, however we have also been in the situation as paediatric professionals, where we have seem the accidents and tragedies that happen in homes and gardens all over the country.

You don’t need first aid until you really NEED it.

We started The Nest because we had witnessed these situations more than once, and then had to treat the aftermath.

This includes living with childhood food allergy. This is not a diagnosis that people plan for and living with a chronic disease where your child could be fatally harmed by another childs PB&J sandwich in the playground, is NOT a walk in the park.

Between our baby and child first aid classes and The Nest Allergy membership, we have you well covered!

🥄 WEANING: “How do I give my baby nuts for the first time?”⠀ ⠀
I’m glad you asked! ⠀
⠀
Here is a great way to gradually introduce nuts at home if your child does NOT have an allergy to nuts. ⠀
⠀
Start by giving 1/8 of a teaspoon of good quality nut butter or ground up nut. ⠀
⠀
Then you can wait 30 mins before doubling that to 1/4 of a teaspoon. ⠀
⠀
Now wait a further 30 mins before giving 1/2 a teaspoon and then.....⠀
⠀
You guessed it, another 30 mins before giving a whole teaspoon!⠀
⠀
This is usually enough to know whether they are ok with that particular nut. ⠀
⠀
It is uber important to keep that food in the diet on a regular basis once they are introduced to it. ⠀
⠀
You can get macadamia, peanut, almond, cashew & brazil in paste form. You can use hazelnut meal too. Any other nuts can be blended up to form a fine meal. ⠀
⠀
We recommend you do this in the morning so that you can spot any potential reactions. ⠀
⠀
Have you introduced nuts to your baby yet? If the answer is yes, how did you do it?

🍬 HOW TO HELP A CHOKING CHILD 🌭⠀

If a child is choking and still breathing:⠀
⠀
In many cases, coughing will help dislodge the object.⠀
⠀
Encourage the child to cough. Infants and young, children may cough instinctively.⠀
⠀
Stay calm and reassure the child.
⠀
⠀
Continue to monitor for breathing until they recover.⠀
⠀
💥If coughing doesn’t help dislodge the object, or the child stops breathing at any time💥⠀
⠀
⛑ Call An Ambulance ⛑⠀
⠀
1. Give five sharp back blows with the heel of your hand between the shoulder blades. ⠀
⠀
In between each back blow, check to see if the object has been dislodged and if the child is breathing.⠀
⠀
⠀
2. If the back blows are unsuccessful, turn the infant onto their back. If an older child is lying down, also turn them onto their back.⠀
⠀
⠀
3. Give five chest thrusts using two fingers (infant) or the heel of your hand (child), keeping your hand in contact with the chest at all times.⠀
⠀
For a chest thrust, position your hand or fingers over the same area you would use for CPR compressions (the lower half of the sternum or 'breast bone’).⠀
⠀
4. After each chest thrust, check to see if the object has been dislodged.⠀
⠀
5. If the blockage has not cleared, continue to alternate between five back blows and five chest thrusts (steps 1 to 4 above) until the ambulance arrives.⠀
